NOVINGER, MO -- Sunday the nation recognized those who served for our country with Veterans Day.

One Heartland school took the time out of class Monday to do the same.

The National Honors Society at Adair County R-I School in Novinger held a Veterans Day Ceremony in the school gym.

The school invited local veterans from the community to come out to be honored.

Students performed with music, songs, and readings to let these veterans know how much they are appreciated.

One local army service woman was touched by the event.

"I think that the Novinger School District did a very excellent job trying to recognize our veterans...past, present, and future. I think the program they provided is a good educational event," said Katie Westerfield of the United States Army.

One local army veteran said an assembly like this gives young people the chance to have a better understanding of what American soldiers do every day to help keep America safe.

"It makes me feel real good. While I was coming in, they were shaking my had. I'm just glad to be an American and support our troops. I think everyone should support them," said John Brownell, a U.S. Navy Veteran.

One local army veteran said he was very proud of these students and thanked them for remembering them on this day.

"Many of the men I was in service with are not here today. I was proud to serve in the United States Army. I'm still proud to be a part of it. I think this program was outstanding," said Gerald Tade, a United States Army Veteran.

The ceremony included the Presentation of Colors and the elementary school students performing the Pledge of Allegiance.

There was also a moment of silence for those who made the ultimate sacrifice and those who are prisoners of war.
