OTTUMWA, IOWA -- If you have ever had to take care of a loved one, you know how much it consumes you.

Well, Friday was all about the caregivers at the Rural Health Center at Indian Hills Community College.

Seneca Area Agency on Aging dedicated Friday to educating those that do just that. With guest speakers, caregivers were able to ask questions and gain the support that they need.

“Caregivers don't think about themselves and lots of times a husband and wife don’t think they are caregivers. When we talk to a husband and wife, they say ‘oh no we're not caregivers’ but they are. They’re taking care of each other so that’s very important to realize if you help someone else to be able to stay in their home, run groceries, go get that for them -- you are a caregiver,” said Joan Nydle, Family Caregiver Specialist.

Around 30 caregivers attended the free conference.

Lunch was provided by Bubba Q’s and in the afternoon caretakers could kick off their shoes and were pampered by the Iowa School of Beauty.

Nydle said these types of days are necessary for caretakers to be able to relax and focus on themselves for once.
