OTTUMWA, IOWA -- As we all know, children especially, Wednesday is Halloween
And that means lots of candy and costumes. But law enforcement officials also want to remind parents and children to be safe on what is supposed to be a fun holiday.
In Ottumwa, trick-or-treating is designated from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
And even if you’re not participating in the festivities, officials want everyone to still use caution.
“We urge caution by all the drivers out there. There's going to be children out and dashing in between cars. We would like for parents to make sure their children have reflective clothing on or reflective items that are in their possession, especially like a glow stick or something like that. Always cross at the corners if they can; travel in groups. It's really important to do that. Safety in numbers always is the rule,” said Lt. Mickey Hucks, Ottumwa Police Department.
Lt. Hucks said they have not heard of any cases in recent years where candy has been tampered with but for parents to still check their children’s candy.
“At the end of the night, we urge parents to go ahead and go through their children’s candy and the items that they get when they’re out and about. Anything that's opened or looks like it’s tampered with, just throw it away. Caution is always the best policy. Use your best judgment when it comes to dealing with what they get,” said Lt. Hucks.
There will be extra law enforcement out patrolling the streets on Halloween.
