BLOOMFIELD, IOWA -- In the event of a heart attack or other medical emergency, an AED could save your life.
The Davis County Hospital applied for a federal grant to purchase 64 defibulators to be given out to local communities. Appanoose, Lucas and Davis counties will each receive AED machines to place in police cars, fire stations, schools and more. The $300,000 grant also supplies mannequins and free CPR classes for residents.
"We knew we wanted to do more in our community, we're very fortunate to have several AEDs in the community, but we knew there wasn't enough to dispense to the entire county," said Kathi Scott, Marketing and Development leader at Davis County Hospital. "So we made the decision when we wanted to apply for it and because the dollar amount was high enough that we knew that we could help more than just our county, so that's when we decided to include other counties in with us."
Each county was able to decide where their AEDs would go and they will be divided up based on population.
Scott said the new defibulators should arrive in December, and the grant covers the next three years.
