OTTUMWA, IOWA -- October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. And Sunday marked the 5th annual Bowl for the Cure put on by the Ottumwa Women’s Bowling Association at Bridge City Bowl.

More than 20 teams participated in the fundraiser, all proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Organizers said the event keeps growing each year. Last year more than $3,000 was raised.

“It's something that we need to get rid of and the Komen Foundation does a great job. The money stays here in southeast Iowa. They use it not only for research but they use it to help people that cannot afford to get mammograms and screenings every year. They put it towards that,” said Nancy Butler, organizer.

Butler added that it’s more than likely that people know someone that has been affected by breast cancer and it’s fundraisers like this one that help spread the awareness of breast cancer.
