Trial delayed for man accused of killing pregnant wife

WAPELLO COUNTY, IOWA -- A man accused of killing his wife and her unborn child in a case that shocked the Heartland, is still awaiting his trial date.

Seth Techel, 22, of Agency, Iowa, will not stand trial next month as scheduled.

Techel is charged with first degree murder and non-consensual termination of a human pregnancy. Police were called to the Techel home in Agency early in the morning of May 27, 2012 where they found Lisa Techel dead from a shotgun blast.

Seth Techel, who had been married to Lisa for less than a year, was arrested later that week.

At the time of her death, Lisa Techel was a Wapello County Sheriff's Reserve officer and worked at the Washington County Jail.

Techel has entered a not guilty plea in the case. He was scheduled for trial on November 6, however the trial will now be rescheduled. The judge has ordered attorneys for both sides to give him available dates no later than October 22.

Techel remains behind bars under $750,000 cash only bond.

According to Iowa Online Court records, Techel's attorney, Steve Gardner filed the plea Friday morning.

Techel called 9-1-1 at approximately 5:23 a.m. on May 26 to report that his wife had been shot and wasn't breathing.
