A demostration of a segway Thursday morning at American Trust Bank in Kirksville
KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- For more than five years, an organization has been providing an efficient way to help disabled veterans and Thursday a local bank helped support the cause.
Since 2006, Segs4Vets for vets have been providing segways to veterans that have sustained injuries which have resulted in the amputation of or both legs, extensive soft tissue and muscle injuries, traumatic burn injuries, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injury and other neurological injuries and disorders.
This year as apart of the Missouri Bank Association, American Trust Bank in Kirksville selected this as a fundraiser to support.
More than 1,000 segways have been given out since the programs existence.
The mission is to give out 500 a year to satisfy the needs of disabled veterans across the United States.
"When you talk to a vet who says they went to a mailbox with their daughter for the first time in three years that's enough feedback as you need, said Scott Nelson of Segs4Vets. "These young men and women have made the supreme sacrifice in many cases."
Back in 2006, the Segs4Vets programs became the only recipient of a blanket waiver from the United States military, allowing a donation in excess of $1,000 to active-duty military personnel.
