OTTUMWA, IOWA -- With the general election approaching, over the next few weeks, KTVO will highlight the candidates running for sheriff throughout southeast Iowa.
In Wapello County, Sheriff Don Kirkendall is retiring and current chief deputy, Mark Miller is running for the seat.
Even though Miller is running unopposed, KTVO spoke with him Thursday to find out what his thoughts are on the department; but also what his long-term goals are for the Wapello County Sheriff’s Office.
“My long term goals would be to increase staffing; there are a lot of people that believe the sheriff's office is very understaffed compared to other counties this size and other counties this busy. We operate well because of the staff we do have. They are a dedicated bunch in all parts of the sheriff's office; whether it is the jail facility, the front office, where we handle the civil division, to the deputies who handle all the emergency calls for service and investigations and the civil process,” Miller said.
Miller also stated that if elected, he wants to continue the great working relationship the sheriff’s office has built with the Ottumwa Police Department.
He also stressed the importance of keeping the department well operated and managed, something that he has worked closely with Sheriff Kirkendall on.
Miller also believes that the current policy manual is outdated and needs to be revised.
