OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Oktoberfest has arrived and that means there will be a packed schedule of activities from now until Saturday.
One of the most anticipated events for the kids is the annual Kiddie Parade, which this year will be at 6 p.m. Friday.
There is still time for kids to register, they have until noon on Friday and can register at either the Church Street or North Court Street South Ottumwa Savings Bank locations or online at www.sosb-ia.com. The parade is open to kids through fifth grade and older kids can participate, but will not be eligible for judging.
The entire event is free, a lot of fun and there will be prizes for the top five costumes.
"I am always impressed with the creativity of the costumes," said Pam Kaupins of South Ottumwa Savings Bank. "People don't just go to the store to get a bought one, they're very creative in putting them together and to me that's one of the most fun parts."
Kids participating in the parade Friday should gather at the intersection of Washington and Main by 5:30 to get assembled. The parade starts promptly at 6 p.m., and will end at the Oktoberfest tent on Church Street. Each child participating in the parade will receive a free hotdog and pop at the tent.
In case of rain on Friday, organizers will make an announcement by 3 p.m. to move the parade to the Quincy Place Mall. In the event of a rainout, only walking entries (no pets, bikes or floats) will be allowed in the mall.
