KIRKSVILLE, MO -- He said he was making a campfire.

Investigators with the Kirksville Fire Department said the fire at lot 18 at Newton’s trailer court on north Walnut Street around 5 p.m. was caused by a juvenile who was playing with matches.

The boy started what he called a campfire outside the trailer near the skirting and a wooden deck.

The flames then moved up the side of the trailer and caught part of the roof on fire.

Firefighters say most of the damage was done to the outside of the trailer, but the flames did burn through the side of the home into the kitchen area.

Damage is estimated at $3,000.

The Battalion Chief said the home should still be livable once repairs are made.

No one was hurt in the incident.
