FAIRFIELD, IOWA -- The Fairfield Police Department is fundraising for a new K9 dog.

The department's current dog, Bonjour, and his officer, Lt. Collin Smith, will both be retiring sometime in February. It is more cost-efficient for the department to get a new dog with a new officer to be trained this spring, rather than send two separate dogs and two separate officers to school.

Officer David Wall will work with the new dog, which they will likely get where they got Bonjour, Mid-Michigan Kennels.

"I'll be working one-on-one with the K9, it'll be a dual-purpose K9, be able to detect narcotics, also tracking for people and also defense," Officer Wall said. "Our funding for the K9's made up of 100% of donations through the city and all the local businesses. I've been going around all week this week trying to get as much money as we can get raised. We're hoping - our goal at the minute is to raise $12,000, that'll cover the cost of the K9 and the schooling, we'd like to get $20,000 or more just to help get new equipment updated for the new K9."

Officer Wall said anyone can donate to the K9 fundraiser by sending a check addressed to the Jefferson County Law Center at 1200 West Grimes Ave, Fairfield, Iowa, 52556, with attention to: Officer Wall or K9 Unit.
