KIRKSVILLE, MO -- Meet 17-year-old Chase Colton of Kirksville. He has been involved with raising hogs since he was 9 years old. His stepfather was a major influence getting him interested in agriculture and introduced him to pigs which he enjoys showing them to this very day.
“They are just goofy and fun to work with. I’ve done a few other things over the years, but pigs have always been there,” Colton said.
Chase is a member of the Kirksville FFA and is the President of the Liberty 4-H Club. He has won many awards such as Showmanship and Champion at the Sullivan County and NEMO Fairs. Chase says that raising and taking care of pigs require a lot of hard work to get to the recognition.
“When it’s hot you have to water them every hour. Make sure they are fed and that their bedding is changed out. Just making sure they are comfortable and doing alright,” Colton said.
Over the years Chase has also had some funny moments with his hogs.
“I had a pig one year when the moment it went into the show ring and peed on the judges’ boots. That was funny but I didn’t win that year,” Colton said.
Chase is planning to continue working in agriculture as he says he doesn’t know what he would do without it.
“I grew up around it. It’s a part of me. It’s always been there. It feels weird to be away from it,” Colton said.
Other than pigs, Chase likes to show cattle and playing on the football team at school. He is planning to attend Moberly Area Community College next fall to continue his studies.
Congratulations Chase on being this week's Ag Kid.
