OTTUMWA, IOWA -- What would you do if you were attacked on the street? Would you know how to defend yourself?

Monday morning, Officer Derek Shaw of the Ottumwa Police Department came to the KTVO studio to show us some self defense moves that anybody can do.

He said practice is key; just doing a move once won’t do you any good.

“The moves that we were showing right there were basic body mechanic moves. Almost everything we do is based on the principle  of balance, power and mobility. Balance coming from your head, the power coming from your hips, and the mobility coming from your legs. What it is is using someone's body mechanics against them so you can use their strength, the way their body bends against them, so a much smaller person can take down a much bigger person or a much bigger person can take down a much smaller person more efficiently so the fight's a lot shorter so everyone's a lot safer,” said Officer Shaw.

Officer Shaw recommends everyone take self defense classes to be prepared for any type of situation.
