KIRKSVILLE, MO -- There’s no question that Hurricane Issac’s timing and impact made a bad situation worse; forcing Gulf Coast refineries and others in its path into partial or complete closures.

According to GasBuddy.com, consumers in 45 of the 50 states across the country will see the highest prices ever for Labor Day weekend travel. The national average has jumped to $3.80 cents this week. Luckily across the Heartland prices are much lower.

If there is any good news, it is that the record highs at the pump are likely to move lower through the weekend. And there is even better news if you buy gas from Walmart, as they are extending and expanding their gas discount program when using a Walmart credit or gift card.

“Gas prices have been fluctuating a lot lately, and especially in the aftermath of Hurricane Issac. Customers need a way to save money. Last year, across the nation, they saved nearly $60 million in gas money because of this program. This is our second year. Last year it was only five cents, this year it is fifteen cents. It’s going to be a lot better deal for them,” said Kirksville Walmart Manager Dough Nichting.

The original discount program was set to end in September, but now extends until Christmas Eve on December 24th. The current deal will be valid at all of Walmart’s Murphy Gas Stations.
