KIRKSVILLE, MO -- Moving into a new apartment is exciting, whether heading off to college or moving across the country. There is one thing renters need to think about, and that is renters insurance.
A landlord’s insurance covers the building, but generally doesn’t provide coverage for a tenant’s personal belonging in the event of fire, theft, or other loss. By purchasing renters insurance, all your personal belongings are insured and you get personal liability coverage.
However if you are a student, it is a little different.
“This is the best piece of advice I always give. Check with you parents homeowner’s insurance company first because many homeowners’ insurance companies today will extend coverage for you while you’re away at school. Every company s different and that is why you need to call your agent at home and find out if you are covered or not,” said Whitney-Harrison Insurance Consultant Larry Byars.
There is one additional thing to be aware of if you are a student. Most insurance companies have new restrictions that limit that coverage once you turn 25. So again, check with your agent first.
