MILAN, MO. -- The City of Milan is demolishing an eyesore on the Southside of its square.
City officials are hosting a pre-construction meeting Monday, Aug. 27, at 10 a.m. at City Hall in order to discuss and coordinate the demolition of the condemned building that sits at the corner of E. 3rd St. and S. Main St.
The building has been condemned for quite some time and several years ago, the back of it fell out. The city now owns the property.
City Administrator James Onello said there are a couple of items that need to be discussed before the building is torn down.
"There is a small amount of asbestos that remains to be taken out," said Onello.
"Just kind of the timing and scheduling of that work...making sure that everybody's on the same sheet of music. The building itself, there's no common wall between that building that's coming down and the building next to it. So, we want to make sure that the Southside of the square doesn't come down with those buildings."
Onello said demolition is scheduled to take place the week of Aug. 27th. The city plans to use the space to construct an amphitheater, where groups can have performances. City officials hope this will entice more people to come to the square.
