KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- A business on Industrial Road in Kirksville gets even more reasons to pursue an expansion.

At Monday’s night’s meeting, the Kirksville City Council unanimously approved an incentive agreement with Hartzell Hardwoods, Incorporated, which just purchased the former Reliant Hardwoods location in Kirksville.

The company is planning to invest $5 million to $6 million in equipment and building expansion and add an additional 15 employees for a total of 25 employees at its Kirksville location.

In exchange, the city is transferring ownership of a 4.28-acre piece of land behind the current facilities as long as Hartzell meets the employment levels set in the agreement.

"The city council always is looking for ways that they can help foster economic development because that's something that's ultimately important to the growth of our community," said Melanie Smith, assistant Kirksville city manager.

The city is also waiving permit fees for the project.

Hartzell also gets to take advantage of the Enhanced Enterprise Zone tax credits they it qualifies for in Adair County.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony at Hartzell Hardwoods is set for 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Also at Monday night's meeting, the city council approved a lease agreement with Cape Air, which will provide air service to Kirksville for the next four years.

The new contract will be for basic terminal rent of $700 per month, along with a few of $40 per landing.

City officials said the additional landing fees could boost airport revenues by an estimated $43,000 each year.
