SOUTH OF KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- A small, single-engine plane had a rough landing at Kirksville Regional Airport Monday afternoon.

Just after 1 p.m., a Piper Cherokee flown by student pilot Ted Bower of Lee's Summit, Mo. lost control during landing thanks to nose gear failure.

According to Kirksville Regional Airport Director David Hall, Bower was coming from Lee's Summit.

His destination was Kirksville as he logged hours toward getting his pilot's license.

Hall said Bower likely did not have the aircraft properly lined up with the runway when he touched down.

The plane ended up in the grass off the edge of the runway.

The aircraft is owned by P & K Aviation, a flight training school in Lee's Summit.

Hall says Bower, who is estimated to be in his 60s, hit his nose during impact and suffered a nose bleed.

He was transported to Northeast Regional Medical Center for treatment and was released.

The plane had minor damage to its nose gear, propeller and wing tip.

The Federal Aviation Administration is conducting a routine investigation.
