KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- With Truman students arriving back into town and classes starting this week, local businesses are ready for the impact.
For the Wal-Mart in Kirksville, they see a 15 percent increase in revenue while school is in session. On top of that, the store manager says, his store is among one the top 100 Wal-Mart's in America that see in impact from being in the same city as a college. On freshman move-in Saturday alone, he adds the store does 50 percent more business than they would on a typical Saturday.
At the Dukum Inn in Kirksville, they're crowd stays consistent throughout the summer months. People around the community that normally wouldn't come out during the school year because of the college crowd, take advantage of the summer months to enjoy the restaurant.
The bar manager at the Dukum Inn adds that their busy period doesn't start until late October. That's when all the fraternities and sororities are done with their rush period, and students are more comfortable adjusting to getting back into the school routine.
