KIRKSVILLE, MO -- With the new school year and a new group of freshman moving in, Truman State University Police and the Department of Public Safety want to remind students about safety.

With burglary and theft the top crimes on campus, police want students to remember to always keep an eye on their valuables and not to leave them out and visible to thieves.

Items like wallets, purses, cell phones and laptops are easy to steal.

Car safety is also important. Police want students to make sure they always lock all the doors and park in well-lit areas at night.

In the end, it's simple common sense that can prevent crimes from happening in the first place.

"If you feel like something is not right, you should pay attention to that feeling because most people have that instinct that it doesn't feel right so they then can try to get out of that situation," said Truman State University Public Safety Director Tom Johnson.

Johnson hopes Truman students will follow safety tips to help them have a fun and safe school year.

Students begin moving in this Saturday, and classes start next Thursday, August 23rd.

Here are some contact numbers studnets should keep handy:
• For all emergencies call 911
• To have an officer dispatched to contact you (non-emergency) 660-665-5621
• Department of Public Safety 660-785-4176
