MILAN, MO -- The halls may be empty now, but in just a few days students will be returning for another year of school. Welcoming them back will be new superintendent Kim Johnson.
“Delighted to be here and looking forward to all the great things we will be doing at Milan C-2 School District. We have been working on professional learning communities and within that positive behavior intervention support and also our differentiated instruction. Those have been very successful! We credit that so much to why our school has been accredited with distinction and we have achieved 13 out of 14 requirements for the state of Missouri,” said Milan C-2 School Superintendent Kim Johnson.
Johnson has been an educator for 18 years in Missouri. When it comes to the budget, things couldn’t look better for the school district.
“We are very fortunate. We have what you call a $3.3 million cash levy for Milan C-2 School District which is kind of unusual for the state of Missouri. I have to credit my predecessor, Mr. Lewis, for ensuring that we had that stability and we are going to continue looking at being very conservative over the next few years,” Johnson said.
A positive budget means the school district was able to higher 16 new employees including a new middle and high school principal.
While no major infrastructure improvements were made over the summer, employees were putting the final touches on painting and other small projects across the school. Additional projects are being looked at for the upcoming school year.
“We are looking at possibly upgrading our infrastructure with our technology. We have great technology with our smart boards in every classroom. We have two tech labs that have been very successful and been upgraded in the last year or so,” Johnson said.
Now school officially starts Tuesday, Aug. 21, and the staff says they will be ready.
