OTTUMWA, IOWA -- The man accused of robbing the South Ottumwa Savings Bank Saturday morning has pled not guilty.

According to the arrest affidavit, Alex Mabe, 37, threatened an employee that he "would shoot" her as he robbed the establishment. He indicated that he was armed with a handgun, and fled the scene on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Mabe was arrested shortly after the incident and charged with second-degree robbery.

He appeared in court Sunday for arraignment and pled not guilty to the robbery charge. Lieutenant Tom McAndrew said that is the only charge brought against Mabe, and at this time, the department is working on building their case.

The court appointed Mabe a State Public Defender, and a preliminary hearing has been set for Monday, August 13 at 10:00 a.m.

Mabe remains in the Wapello County Jail on a $10,000 cash only bond.
