KIRKSVILLE -- Parents getting their kids ready to head back to school are saving a lot of cash the first weekend of August, as they take advantage of the sales tax holiday.
Across Missouri this weekend, shoppers will not have to pay the 4.2 percent sales tax on items such as computers, school supplies and clothing. In Kirksville, shoppers will save 7.85 percent on qualifying purchases; at JCPenney, the shoppers were raking in on the savings.
One shopper said she'll probably spend $100 dollars this year on school clothes.
"It's great! It's saving me money," said Robbi Shedron. "I feel like I can buy more than what I normally would because I don't have to pay the taxes."
JCPenney Store Leader Janet Gremaud said the back-to-school shopping season is one of the busiest times of the year for the store.
"It's one of the two big shopping events for our store next to black Friday and Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season," said Gremaud. "Back-to-school is the time when a lot of our customers are shopping and need to get out and take care a lot of their shopping needs."
The Sales Tax Holiday in Missouri applies to any piece of clothing that does exceed $100 in value, school supplies that do not exceed $50 per purchase, computer software that does not exceed $350 in value, and personal computers that do not exceed $3,500.
The Sales Tax Holiday in Missouri ends Sunday.
