KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- Some Kirksville residents are looking to help you and your pet while you and others enjoy the walking trails around the Kirksville R-3 campus.

The schools' walking trails on the loop and along Cottage Grove Avenue are where students in the current Kirksville Leadership Institute (KLI) class want to place doggie waste stations.

Each year the group does a community project to try to improve the city, and the students thought the waste stations would help the city most.

"Unfortunately, sometimes people don't want to pick up waste of their pets," said Supervisor of the Kirksville Leader Institute Andy Magruder. "We thought if we provide a trash can with bags people would be more apt to pick up the waste and just make it a cleaner, safer place for everyone."

Each waste station cost $229, and the group's goal is to raise at least $1,000 to place four of them along the trail.

Other than accepting donations of money at the Kirksville Area Chamber of Commerce office, there are four events the KLI class is holding. Here is a list:

Friday, August 10 - Chamber Golf Tournament at the Kirksville County Club 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Saturday, August 18 - Hy-Vee 8 a.m to noon.

Tuesday, August 21 - Bellacino's from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Thursday, August 28 - Colton's from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
