DRAKESVILLE, IOWA -- This year marks the 166th year of the Davis County Old Soldiers and Settlers Reunion in Drakesville, Iowa.
John Adams Drake was the founder and settler of the town of Drakeville in 1846. The “S” was added some time later to make “Drakesville” the name it is today.
The festivities began on Thursday with a tractor pull and ended Saturday night with the Southern Reign Bluegrass Band.
This year a new event was added, a garden and flower show.
“I was really, really pleased with it for the first year and a lot of people didn't know about it and with the condition of the weather -- dry condition you know -- there was not a lot of good gardens out there but I was real happy with the turnout,” said Maggie Smith, Flea Market/Display Booths Committee.
One of the major events each year is the “Presentation of the Chair.” The chair is presented to the oldest settler and this year it was donated by Buddy Harsch and his family in honor of Swede King.
Organizers of the event said it is a great way to celebrate the community they call home.
