KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- If you bought a new Nook Tablet or a Kindle Fire and have no idea how to use it, the Adair County Public Library can help.

On Thursday, and throughout August, the library is offering hands-on training sessions on how to use e-readers. The sessions allow people to bring their own and learn how to use them.

Trainer Kara Drury said the e-readers give readers a chance to explore beyond what's written in the books.

"When you're reading a book, there's so many things you can do with the text," said Drury.  "You can make the text bigger, smaller, if you have eye problems. You can have the book be read to you, if you want that, which is really cool. Not all devices do that but some of them do. You can also hold down on a word and the definition or thesaurus will pop up and tell you anything you want to know about that word or phrase."

Library Circulation staffers said the library is offering the classes because it's getting busy with patrons, asking questions about how to use them.

"There's like five or six different people that come in everyday asking about e-readers," said Samantha Preston.  "They want us to stay at the desk and help them. But we can't really do that.  That's why we have these scheduled classes is because we have so many people coming up and saying how do I do this or download e-books."

The Adair County Public Library allows patrons to check out e-books for one to two weeks, as long as they have less than five dollars in fines.

The next training sessions are:

Tuesday, August 7, 6-7 p.m.

Saturday, August 11, 2-3 p.m.

Friday, August 17, 4-5 p.m.

The Adair County Public Library received a grant of $2,256 from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to purchase the eReaders.
