OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Students at Evans Middle School will be seeing a new face in the hallway the first day of school; Dave Harper has recently been hired as the middle school principal.
And he’s no stranger to southeast Iowa. He comes to Ottumwa from the Pekin Community School District where he served as principal.
Harper was hired after former Evans Middle School Principal Dan Maeder accepted the position as superintendent of Davis County Schools.
Ottumwa Schools staff said Harper was the ideal candidate for the position.
“He brings a lot of compassion for students and student achievement. At Evans Middle School it’s no easy task. We have 1,150 students -- very unique and diverse needs -- and we're just looking forward to Dave’s leadership and the compassion he brings to education and students and we just look forward to Dave getting started to work with our students, parents and our teachers,” said Dr. Davis Eidahl, Ottumwa Schools Superintendent.
Dr. Eidahl said Harper has already been in the office quite a bit already even though his official start date isn’t until August 1.
