Gov. Jay Nixon signs House Bill 1680 at Broyles Transfer and Storage in Kirksville
KIRKSVILLE, MO -- Since the establishment of the Show-Me Heroes program introduced by Gov. Jay Nixon in 2010, more than 1600 veterans have been hired by Missouri businesses, and now the number could be on the rise.
The governor was on hand Monday morning at Broyles Transfer and Storage in Kirksville to sign House Bill 1680.
The new law strengthens and expands the employment opportunities for Missouri veterans in the Show-Me Heroes program.
"The legislation also expands the eligibility for financial assistance to the spouses of active-duty service members, and that includes payments with overdue bills; helping in transportation and daycare cost when their looking for work; and providing vocational counseling and subsidized employment," says Gov. Jay Nixon.
The bill will also add an on-the-job (OJT) training component.
It will be for returning members of the National Guard, Reservists and recently-separated active-duty service members the Show-Me-Heroes employers agree to hire.
With this program, employers would be reimbursed for 50% of the participant's wages during a contracted training period.
