NEAR MACON -- Update: June 23, 9:00 p.m., University Hospital Officials said Abigail Shaffer is in fair condition.

As of Friday afternoon, a northeast Missouri woman was hospitalized in serious condition after an SUV she was riding in overturned.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Abigail Shaffer, 34, of Bevier, was flown to a hospital in Columbia after Thursday night’s crash on Highway 63, 3 miles south of Macon.

Investigators said Joseph Contratto, 29, of Bevier, was driving northbound when he swerved to miss a bicyclist on the roadway.

Authorities said he overcorrected the vehicle, and it ran off the east side of the road where it then overturned, throwing Shaffer from the vehicle.

Contratto and Shaffer were not wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
