KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- What some describe as a parking nightmare just got scarier.

During Monday evening's Kirksville City Council meeting, members voted unanimously 3-0 to eliminate seven to eight parking spaces at the intersection of Emmett and Novinger streets near the North Park Baseball/Softball Complex.

A shortage of parking in that area was already an issue.

The owner of the Frito-Lay Distribution Center at that intersection had expressed to the city concerns about its large trucks being able to safely maneuver in and out of the driveway when a lot of baseball and softball fans parked their cars and trucks in this area.

Police Chief Jim Hughes told KTVO drivers have a couple of weeks to get used to the three new "No Parking" signs.

"We won't actively enforce it until the 15th of June, which will then allow the city to do some education efforts for those who regularly, at least, attend...any of the activities up at the North Ballfields,” said Hughes.

At Monday's meeting, the city council unanimously approved a resolution authorizing the city to submit an application to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources "Land and Water Conservation Fund" to pay for 45 percent of the cost.

The $77,000 worth of upgrades would include new playground equipment, drainage improvements and better access for those with disabilities.

The city would have to fork over $42,000 from the Capital Improvements Sales Tax fund.

The work at Jaycee Park is scheduled to take place in spring of 2013.
