KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- When you get a new cell phone, you could be leaving behind valuable information on your old phone.

So, for our Facebook Story of the Day, many of you wanted to know how you can safely remove personal information before getting rid of your old phone.

Most cell phones these days store information both internally and externally.

Internally means it is saved onto your phone. Externally means it is saved onto a memory card or SIM card.

In most cases, there are applications you can download to help erase any valuable information you no longer want on your phone.

“There's android applications if you carry a smart phone such as an android, those include android lost, look out mobile security. Some of them are free and for a premium charge, some of the applications will do more such as delete or fine your phone in the event that its lost or stolen and virus protection as well,”  said Amanda Dunwoody, U.S. Cellular store manager.

“There are other ways you can delete information off your phone, so if you were to follow the manufactures directions for a factory reset, that will clear all the information off your phone,” Dunwoody said.

If you delete something on your phone by accident, don't panic.

There are different apps you can install on your phone, some of them for free, that will store your information online.

You will then be able to re-download that information back onto your phone.
