OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Ottumwa Regional Health Center and the community came together Friday afternoon to say thank you to EMS personnel and other first responders for their dedication and hard work as part of EMS appreciation week.

The ambulance bays at the hospital were packed with community members, employees from the hospital and of course, first responders from throughout Ottumwa.

Ottumwa Regional’s Chief Nursing Officer, Lee Anne Montgomery, told KTVO that because of the outstanding EMS services the hospital provides and the great teamwork within the department, the rest of the hospital thrives.

“I think certainly it is a show of appreciation. They need to know from the top to the bottom, you know, it is now about where you stand or your position, it is about we are all apart of a team together. Without any one leg of that team, we could not function. We could not take care of the community. But together, we all come together as one, and that is part of the reason we are out here today,” said Montgomery.

David Howard, EMS Manager for Ottumwa Regional, told KTVO that to see so many people at the event, really made him and his staff feel appreciated in the community.

“It is just an awesome feeling to know that there is that many people that support us, support what we do, and are willing to give back to those that serve. As Lee Anne said, a lot of the time, we don’t take the time to recognize those who help provide services to us, and to the community; but everybody that helps in the community is a valuable asset to us,” said Howard.

EMS week is a national recognized week in which emergency medical service employees, including paramedics, are thanked for their service to the community.
