KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- A Kirksville man is $10,000 richer after purchasing a Missouri Lottery scratchers ticket at Kum & Go in Kirksville.
Billy Gordy, 29, of Kirksville, had just left his work and stopped by the convience store to get a drink.
"I had a $20 ticket that I cashed in. I said, ‘Just give one of those there,’” Gordy recalled. “It’s just kind of the luck of the draw. I don’t play regular games on Scratchers, I just pick something.”
Gordy picked a “100 Million Dollar Blockbuster” Scratchers ticket, which was odd for him since he “hadn’t won anything on that ticket in the past.” He scratched the ticket in the store and realized he had matched one number.
“I was like, ‘I won $10,’ you know? Then I scratched off that $10,000, and I about had a heart attack,” he said. “I’m still kind of shocked.”
Gordy is no stranger to winning. He won a $10,000 prize two years ago and a second prize in a lottery promotion. He occasionally wins smaller Scratchers prizes and hit a Quick Pick combination in Pick 3 recently.
“I play a couple of times a week,” he admitted. “I don’t spend a whole lot, but I play. You have to play to win.”
As for plans for the windfall, Gordy said it was “going straight to the bank.”
“I’ve already bought stuff for my daughter’s birthday party this weekend,” he said. “I’ve got bills paid off, and it’s going to the bank.”
Gordy said he’ll keep playing the Lottery.
“You’ve got to play to win, but don’t go over your head, plain and simple,” he advised. “If you don’t have it, don’t spend it.”
