KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- It was a solemn evening Friday on the lawn of the Adair County Courthouse in Kirksville.

About 60 residents and law enforcement officers gathered for the 2012 National Police Week Candlelight Vigil put on by the Adair County Sheriff's Office and Kirksville Police Department .

Candlelight vigils like the one in Kirksville were held across the country to honor those law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

It was a little too breezy to light the candles Friday evening, but those attending observed a moment of silence to honor those killed in the line of duty.

Guest speakers were Lt. Col. Jim Tenpenny of Truman State University’s Military Science Program and Pastor Ryan Lingbloom of "The Crossing" church in Kirksville.
