OTTUMWA, IOWA -- The Ottumwa Transit buses are in the works of getting a new addition: bike racks.
The OTA feels the bike racks would meet a lot of needs.
“It's good for the green effect of our country. We're all trying to move forward in that direction. There are unbelievable -- a considerable amount of people who don't own a car and riding a bicycle is not only good exercise it is in fact part of their daily transportation,” said Diane Gawronski, Executive Director of Ottumwa Transit.
The OTA said they are trying to arrive at a figure that won’t affect taxpayers at all. Local groups have already expressed interest in sponsoring some of the bike racks.
“We would like to see some of the racks installed by the end of this year. Ideally, we would like to install them all at once. That would make the most sense. However, if we only have limited funding we might be able to do that in stages,” said Gawronski.
Gawronski added that most big cities already have bike racks on their buses so it is time for Ottumwa to do the same.
