OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Last week, KTVO brought you the story about the 11-year-old juvenile accused of intentionally setting two fires. This week the Ottumwa Fire Department is recognizing Arson Awareness Week.

It just so happens that this year’s theme, preventing juvenile arson, is particularly timely.  Firefighters want kids to be aware that arson is a serious crime and they will be prosecuted to the fullest extent.

It starts with the parents getting the message out.

“Set the example, be safe.  You know when you’re out around a recreational fire, don't let the kids light them. Don't let them get too comfortable because it's all about comfort. If they're comfortable with fire, then they're going to play with fire,” said Deputy Fire Chief Cory Benge.

If you see that your child is playing with fire, the Ottumwa fire Department offers a Juvenile Fire Setters Program.

“What we do is sit down and talk with them and we grade them on the severity of their fire play. And then we send them off to the --take the appropriate actions---and you know get counselors involved and that type of thing,” said Deputy Fire Chief Cory Benge.

Each year there are about six kids that go through the program.
