CENTERVILLE, IOWA -- The Associated Press is reporting that Davis County Attorney Rick Lynch will fill in for suspended Appanoose County Attorney Richard Scott.

Chief Judge James Blomgren on Friday appointed  Lynch and his assistant as temporary county attorneys in neighboring Appanoose County.

The Iowa Supreme Court has temporarily suspended the law license of a small county's top prosecutor.

In an order Wednesday, Chief Justice Mark Cady granted the attorney disciplinary board's request to issue a disability suspension to Appanoose County Attorney Richard Scott.

Cady said there was sufficient evidence Scott was currently unable to "discharge his professional responsibilities." He waived a requirement that the suspension not take effect for 20 days, citing "exigent circumstances."

Cady's order didn't provide more details.

A woman answering the phone in Scott's office declined comment.

KTVO will continue to follow this story and will provide an update if the Appanoose County Attorney's Office or Richard Scott issues a statement.

Iowa attorneys who cannot work "due to disability, incapacity, abandonment of practice, or disappearance" can face disability suspensions. Their licenses can be reinstated when they show they're qualified to resume their practice.
