MT. PLEASANT, IOWA -- Earth Day is Sunday, and Iowa Wesleyan College honored the day by hosting their first-ever Green Fest Thursday morning.

The day featured exhibits on water conservation, recyclable metal and sustainable agriculture practices, all to promote the idea of "reduce, reuse, recycle".

Dozens of youths and adults entered the recycled art contest, to show off arts and crafts items made entirely from recyclable or repurposed materials. Mt. Pleasant fourth graders also participated in a tree planting ceremony.

"Our college students actually did a lot of the work facilitating and setting up the exhibits for the youth, for the kids, so they were actually teaching, our college students were basically teaching fourth graders from our public school systems things related to sustainability," said Alisha Vincent, Director of Service Learning and Civic Engagement.

Dr. Francis Thicke of Fairfield, Iowa gave a presentation on how to maintain an organ and sustainable farm.

The success of the day meant IWC hopes to do it each year.

"Iowa Wesleyan College is working hard to be more earth-friendly, we did some very extensive geo-thermal technology on our campus over the summer and we're working more and more to raise awareness and do things on campus to reduce our carbon footprint," said Vincent.
