OTTUMWA, IOWA -- The Ottumwa City Council will be discussing an improvement to the bike trail system at Tuesday's meeting -- and it won't cost the city one penny.
A community member has volunteered his money and resources to construct a 12-foot by 14-foot shelter along the path near Madison Street.
"We just are very appreciative of people like Chuck Bates who volunteer for countless projects in the community and that's really what makes this community great," said Ottumwa City Administrator Joe Helfenberger.
The shelter will be a "kiosk" for people to rest and get out of the weather. A similar shelter is constructed near Mark's Auto.
The measure was already passed by the Wapello County Trails Council March 27 and by the Ottumwa Parks Advisory Board April 10. There is a good chance that it will be passed by the council.
"I would think it would be, it's being done without any tax money, which is music to my ears!" said Helfenberger.
