NEAR KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- Two fugitives are in custody after leading law enforcement officers on a manhunt that lasted more than two hours.

It started at 3:05 p.m. Thursday in a field off of Rye Creek Road west of Kirksville.

Detectives with the Kirksville Police Department tipped off the Adair County Sheriff's Office that they had received information that Anthony "Tony" Baugher, 56, and Sheila Hatfield, 34, both from Kirksville, were in that area.

When investigators started their search, they found the fugitives near a makeshift campsite, and then the two fled on foot into the woods.

Officers in the Missouri State Highway Patrol's aircraft were able to guide those on the ground to the suspects.

They also got some four-legged help.

"Where we had our first perimeter set up, they were spotted at a different area so we moved from there and put up another perimeter at a second location and secured that area,” Adair County Sheriff Robert Hardwick said. “And, then we went in where they were last seen, myself and the highway patrol along with the K-9 from the highway patrol, and made the apprehension."

Local park rangers also helped with the manhunt.

The fugitives were finally captured in a wooded area west of the Adair County Animal Shelter.

"That's a big area out there, a lot of hills, a lot of timber, a lot of ditches and things of this nature, but everyone worked well together,” said Hardwick. “I have nothing but praise for the tips and the community and also the area law enforcement. It was just a super operation."

The two fugitives were caught without further incident at approximately 5:20 p.m.

Hardwick said the suspects made the comment they were tired of running.

Baugher was wanted on Adair County warrants for DWI-persistent offender as well as a parole violation out of the state of Georgia.

Hatfield was wanted for leaving the scene of an accident and for a probation violation in Newtown County, Missouri.

Baugher and Newton were previously featured as Kirksville Police Department “Fugitives of the Week.”
