KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- The Kirksville City Council approved the purchase of two used pieces of equipment Monday night that the Public Works Department can use to do small-scale asphalt repair projects around the city.
The price tag for the used milling machine and asphalt paver is $144,300.
Before now, the city has had to rely on a contractor to do any type of pavement repair larger than potholes.
That often meant a long wait because a contractor didn’t want to make a special trip to Kirksville for just a small project.
"Where we have an area of 100-200 feet, we'll be able to come in and repair the base, and using either a cold mix or a hot mix asphalt that we'll purchase, (we'll) be able to do that paving ourselves and get a better repair done quickly so that we don't have to live with that until the next year when a paver's available,” Kirksville Public Works Director John Buckwalter said.
Also at Monday night's city council meeting, Mayor Richard Detweiler presented the "keys to the city" to Dr. Jack Magruder, the president of A.T. Still University, for his role in bringing the new dental school to Kirksville.
The council also unamimously approved a resolution recognizing Corporal Steve Albertson of the Kirksville Police Department on his retirement.
He has been with KPD for 25 years and seven months, and he had 22 consecutive years of perfect attendance.
Albertson's last day on the job was April 1, 2012.
