KIRKSVILLE, MO -- One major Heartland supermarket chain is taking an item out of its meat case.

In response to concerns expressed by customers, Hy-Vee has decided to discontinue the purchase of ground beef products containing lean finely textured beef or "pink slime."

Although the ground beef meets all USDA standards for quality and safety, recent news stories on pink slime have led to a loss of consumer confidence in the product.

In a news release, Hy-Vee says it has notified its suppliers of the decision and is working to switch product lines as soon as possible.

Hy-Vee also thanks customers for sharing their feedback on the issue.

KTVO contacted a few local stores and the Hy-Vee corporate office in West Des Moines for more information, but no one was available for comment.
