WAPELLO COUNTY, IOWA -- A fatal crash took place in Wapello County near Eddyville on Friday.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, Winfred Neil Douglass, 87, of West Des Moines, Iowa, died after the vehicle he was driving collided with another vehicle at the intersection of Eddyville Road and Highway 63.

The second vehicle was driven by Dennis Cockayne Jr., 42, of Des Moines, Iowa. Laura Cockayne, 14, also of Des Moines, was riding in the vehicle.

The patrol's investigation indicates that Douglass was traveling northbound on Eddyville Road and failed to yield at a stop sign. Authorities say Douglass pulled into the path of Cockayne's vehicle, which was traveling eastbound on Highway 63.

Douglass' vehicle was struck in the left driver's side door. Douglass was pronounced dead at the scene. Both Cockaynes were transported to the Ottumwa Regional Health Center.
