OTTUMWA, IOWA -- For Tuesday's Facebook Story of the Day, you wanted to know how long after moving to a different state you have before getting a new license and vehicle plates.

In Iowa, you have 30 days after establishing permanent residency for both your license and plate renewal. There is no penalty for not renewing your license, however, it is strongly suggested.

The Ottumwa DMV said there is a chargeback on vehicle plates from when you first establish residency in the state. The longer you wait to change plates, the more you will pay. Exceptions are made in certain circumstances, or if you are a student or live in another state and commute to Iowa for work.

To renew your license, you have to bring several documents with you, including a proof of identity and proof of residency, your social security card and either your birth certificate or a valid passport.

For more information and frequently asked questions regarding driver's licenses and vehicle plates, visit the Iowa Department of Transportation website.
