KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- With the warm weather starting to make a return, that means severe weather season is right around the corner. Kirksville and Truman State University will be testing the emergency sirens Friday morning between 10 and 11.

The sirens are normally tested on the last Friday of each month.

This additional test is just to make sure everything is in working order.

“Last year during it, I think we had bad weather and wasn’t able to test them during the state wide drill and we just wanted to test them before hand,” said Kirksville Fire Department Chief Randy Behrens.

Tornado warnings are issued by the National Weather Service but sirens are set off locally.

“Dispatch actually sets them off working with emergency management on when to set them off,” Behrens said.

If bad weather is a possibility Friday morning, the test will be canceled.  The Missouri state wide tornado drill is scheduled for the afternoon of March 13 at 1:30 and everyone is encouraged to participate.
