KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- Ready or not, we're heading into the season of grass fires.

The conditions are prime right now for a small spark to quickly get out of control.

The strong wind gusts, low humidity and very dry vegetation out there make the perfect recipe for disaster.

Kirksville Fire Chief Randy Behrens advises that if you have any outdoor burning to do that you delay it for awhile.

"If you're burning your trash out there, you might want to wait a few days. Let the wind die down, especially when the wind is blowing like it is today. (It could) move sparks off of a trash fire, barrel fire, out on the farm, and it'll get away from you really quick," said Behrens.

Meteorologist Teresa Carter said we aren't out of the woods yet.

She is expecting gusts up to 35 miles per hour to continue Wednesday.

But there is some promising news.

Teresa is forecasting rain for Wednesday, likely in the late afternoon into the evening time frame.
