GREEN CITY, MO -- Meet 15-year-old Hadley Williams of Green City. He has been in agriculture as long he can remember. He has taken on the family business of raising cattle. The torch was passed down to him from his mom whose interest was also cattle. Today he owns about 100 of them.
“I can remember as young as I was just riding around the truck with my dad and grandpa out tagging calves. When I was four, my dad gave my brother and I our first two calves. I’ve been around them so much I can tell from across the field which cow is which.”
For the past 7 years has shown his cattle in fairs in Milan, Kirksville, Trenton, and Bethany and has won the Herdsmanship Award on numerous occasions. With all the recognition, Hadley says behind all of that are dedication, hard work, and responsibility to take care of his cattle.
“You got to make sure they are good, healthy, and clean. You just got to keep a close eye on them to make sure everything is going great.”
Hadley has also shared some funny moments with his cattle.
“We were at the Bethany Fair, my mom was grooming my brother’s calf. He was just playing around and put his two back legs on her. Everyone thought he was trying to hurt her, but he was just playing around. I thought it was funny.”
Hadley plans to attend college someday and become a veterinarian. He says agriculture is reason he wants to go down on this path.
“It’s just been interesting to me on how agriculture is like to help make medicine and the animals. The science behind it is crazy.”
Hadley is a member of Green City 4-H and FFA clubs and is also involved in school sports teams in baseball and basketball. He plays for the school’s marching band as well.
Congratulations Hadley on being this week's Ag Kid.
