OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Ottumwa Police Chief Jim Clark released this statement Wednesday regarding the arrest of a 12-year-old student who attends Evans Middle School in Ottumwa.
On February 8, 2012, the Ottumwa Police Department took into custody a 12-year-old student after investigating complaints of harassment from at least 21 students at Evans Middle School. Iowa law states a person commits harassment when the person, purposefully and without legitimate purpose, has personal contact with another person, with the intent to threaten, intimidate, or alarm that other person.

The investigation began after numerous students approached school officials about being harassed by the student. Harassment is a violation of Chapter 708.7 of the Code of Iowa and is a Simple Misdemeanor. The child was released to a parent.
“The Ottumwa Community School District and the Ottumwa Police Department partner together to provide the safest learning environment possible for students and staff at Evans Middle School. Whenever we receive complaints of a student harassing others, we will investigate and take the appropriate action to ensure each student is free from threats or intimidation," said Chief Clark.
