KIRKSVILLE, MO -- Catholic schools across the nation are celebrating an annual event.

Mary Immaculate Catholic School in Kirksville is taking part in National Catholic Schools Week. This year's theme is "Catholic Schools: Faith, Academics, and Service."

Events include an open house, a joy day in which students recognize other classmates, a service project of putting together gift bags for those living in nursing homes, and a parent appreciation lunch.

Principal Sister Ruth Ann Klauser said this special week helps teach students how much of a difference they can make with others.

"It's a nationwide example to make people aware of what good citizens our children are and learn how to become effective in the community as a result of what they are learning in their school," Klauser said.

Klauser also talked about how this week shows students how to become leaders in the community.

"They are learning about their faith and how to use it out on a day to day basis. Also trying to have them become leaders in both their school and in the future," Klauser said. "The student council takes a very active part in doing activities during the week to make students aware that leadership starts at an early age."

The event also gives new families an opportunity to apply for the next school year. Mary Immaculate School teaches students from Pre-Kindergarten to 8th grade.
