OTTUWMA, IOWA -- Fraud within Medicare and Medicaid is a hot topic in health care today.
People in the Ottumwa area who are concerned about seniors and Medicare fraud can volunteer to become part of the Senior Medicaid Patrol.
Members of SMP talk to concerned seniors with questions about fraud, and teach them how to protect, detect and report health care fraud. SMP volunteers can also help report any potential errors, inconsistencies, fraud and abuse.
"One of our jobs is to get around to different people in the community to talk about medicare fraud and how important it is that everybody takes the time to look at their statements when they come back so they can detect whether there are any errors and then report them," SMP speaker Colleen Reed said.
Volunteers don't have to have any background in the medical profession. SMP provides training .
